What to Expect on Flooring Installation Day

You’ve chosen the flooring. You’ve signed off on the estimate. Installation day is on the calendar. Now what? For most homeowners, this is the moment the abstract project — samples, decisions, deposit checks — becomes a real crew in the house doing real work. Knowing what to expect makes the whole day easier for everyone.

At Triangle Flooring Center, we’ve been doing installations across Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, and Pittsboro since 1994 with our own certified in-house team. Here is a step-by-step walk through what usually happens on the day.

The week before

A few days before installation, take stock of the rooms being floored. Everything on the floor needs to be moved out, and everything on top of low furniture (lamps, picture frames, delicate items) should be relocated to a safe spot. Empty closets that are getting new flooring. Take down anything hanging low on the walls near the floor line.

Think about pets and children. Installation days are noisy and unpredictable, and both are safer somewhere else — with a family member, at daycare, at a friend’s — for at least the disruptive parts of the day. Plan meals ahead if the kitchen is being worked on, and set up a temporary coffee station somewhere the crew won’t be.

The morning of installation

Our team typically arrives in the morning with the flooring materials, tools, and everything needed to protect the rest of your home. The first thing we do is walk the space with you, confirm the scope, and answer any last-minute questions. If you’ve changed your mind about a small detail — a transition strip, a threshold, the direction of the plank run — this is the moment to say so.

After that, we get to work. The first task is usually preparing the space: laying down protective coverings on adjacent floors, protecting nearby walls and cabinets, and setting up work zones. If any furniture couldn’t be moved before we arrived, we can typically handle it, but letting us know in advance helps everything move faster.

Removing the old floor

Old carpet, old vinyl, old tile — all of it has to come out before the new floor goes in. This is often the messiest phase of the day. Dust and debris happen even with careful work, especially with older adhesives, tack strips, and any grout that has to be removed. We contain it as well as possible, but it’s not invisible.

This phase is also when we discover any subfloor issues that couldn’t be seen through the old flooring. In older Carrboro, Chapel Hill, and Durham homes, subfloor surprises are common — soft spots, uneven boards, previous water damage. Our team is trained to handle these correctly rather than papering over them, because a poorly prepped subfloor undermines even the best new floor. If something significant comes up, we’ll discuss it with you before proceeding.

Preparing the subfloor

Once the old flooring is out, the subfloor gets attention. Depending on the material going down, this might mean cleaning, leveling, patching, adding an underlayment, or installing a moisture barrier. This is unglamorous work that most homeowners never see, but it is the single most important predictor of how good your new floor will look and how long it will last.

Skipping subfloor prep is one of the most common ways installations fail. Because our installers are on our own team and answer to us, they take the time to prep properly — every job, every time.

Installing the new floor

The actual installation of your new flooring is often the fastest-looking part of the day, even though it takes precision and experience to do well. Whether the material is hardwood, luxury vinyl, tile, laminate, or carpet, each has its own technique — nailing patterns, adhesive requirements, seaming, cutting around obstacles.

Some projects finish in a single day. Larger installations, tile work that needs grout to cure, and whole-home projects can span multiple days. If your project is multi-day, we’ll coordinate arrival times each morning and make sure the house is left in a livable state overnight.

The final walk-through

Before we leave, we walk the completed floor with you. This is your chance to look at every transition, every edge, every corner. If anything doesn’t look right, we’d rather fix it now than have you notice a week later. We also share care instructions specific to your new floor — what to clean with, what to avoid, and what to expect in the first few weeks as materials settle.

Every installation is backed by our guaranteed workmanship. Because our installers are our own employees, not subcontractors, the person you call if anything ever needs attention is the same team that put the floor in — and we’re right here in Carrboro.

A few small things that make the day smoother

Keep a path clear for the crew to move materials in and out of the house. Ask about parking if your street is tight. Silence any doorbells if you can — installers hear enough noise. Make sure someone with decision-making authority is reachable by phone even if they aren’t on-site. And if you’re the coffee-and-doughnuts type, our crews always appreciate it, though it’s not expected.
