What to Bring to Your Flooring Consultation (and Why It Makes a Difference)
A great flooring consultation feels like a good conversation — one where the person across from you actually understands what you’re trying to do, and helps you get there. But that conversation goes much better when you arrive prepared. A little advance thought turns a general chat into a focused, productive planning session.
At Triangle Flooring Center, we’ve helped thousands of Carrboro, Chapel Hill, Durham, Raleigh, and Pittsboro homeowners plan flooring projects since 1994. Whether you’re visiting our showroom, meeting a team member at your home for our Shop at Home service, or scheduling a free in-home estimate, here’s how to make the most of it.
Bring photos of your space
The single most useful thing you can bring is photos. Take a few pictures of each room you’re considering flooring for — one wide shot from the doorway, a couple of details of the corners, and a shot showing the transitions to adjacent rooms. Include shots of any existing floors you’re not replacing, so we can help you plan for how the new work will meet them.
Photos are especially helpful for open-plan homes, where the floor choice affects several rooms at once. Seeing how your kitchen flows into your living room, and what colors are already at play, lets us make better recommendations from the start.
Bring rough measurements (or approximate square footage)
You don’t need to be precise — we’ll measure exactly if we come to your home for an estimate. But even a rough sense of square footage for each room helps ground the conversation. If you’re comparing options across categories, knowing whether you’re flooring 800 square feet or 2,400 changes what’s realistic within a given budget.
An easy way to get rough numbers: length times width for each room, then add them up. It doesn’t have to be exact.
Bring samples of what you already have
Whatever you’re keeping — cabinets, countertops, trim, wall paint, upholstery — will interact with your new floor. Bring small physical samples if you have them. A cabinet drawer front. A tile scrap from a recent bath renovation. A paint chip. A photo of your dining table. Anything that tells us what tones and finishes the new floor needs to live alongside.
This matters more than most homeowners realize. A floor that looks perfect in a showroom can clash badly with warm wood cabinets or cool-toned granite once it’s actually installed. Bringing samples helps us catch that in the planning phase, not on installation day.
Have a sense of your priorities — even loose ones
You don’t need to have decided on hardwood versus luxury vinyl before you walk in. But it helps to know your general priorities. Are you prioritizing durability, budget, look, feel underfoot, water resistance, resale value, or some mix? Which rooms have kids, pets, or heavy traffic?
Even a rough answer to those questions lets us guide the conversation toward the options that actually make sense for you, instead of walking you through every material on the floor. If you’re not sure what you want, that’s fine too — we’re used to helping people figure it out.
Bring your questions
Write down any questions you have — about materials, installation, timeline, care, warranty, budget, financing, anything. Bringing a written list means you actually ask them all instead of remembering the important one on the drive home. Common questions worth asking:
How long will installation take? What happens if you find something unexpected under the old floor? How do I care for this specific material? Can I see and feel samples? What’s the difference between the two options you’re recommending? Do you offer financing? (We do — subject to credit approval.) Who actually installs the floor?
On that last one: our installers are our own employees, not subcontractors. That’s been true since we opened in 1994, and it’s one of the reasons we can back every job with guaranteed workmanship.
Know your timeline (or don’t — that’s okay too)
If you have a hard deadline — a house going on the market, family visiting for the holidays, an anniversary — let us know. Timeline shapes what’s possible. Some materials install faster than others. Some products require ordering time. Knowing your calendar helps us plan a realistic sequence.
If you don’t have a deadline, that’s fine. Some homeowners plan for months. Others come in ready to move quickly. Both work.
If you’re using Shop at Home, prepare the space
If our team is coming to your home for a Shop at Home visit, a few small preparations help. Clear a bit of floor space in the rooms you want to focus on. Make sure the lighting is normal for how you actually use the room — natural light in the day, lamps on if that’s how the space usually reads. Have any samples or references from other rooms handy.
And you don’t need to clean or stage the house. We’re there to help you plan, not to judge how many toys are on the floor.
What we bring to the conversation
On our end, we bring decades of experience across every category we carry — carpet, hardwood, tile, laminate, luxury vinyl, and area rugs. We bring honest recommendations — including the honest recommendation to consider something you didn’t ask about, or to hold off on something you did. And we bring an in-house installation team that has been serving the Triangle since 1994.
Our goal in a consultation isn’t to sell you the most expensive thing on the floor. It’s to help you find the right thing for your home. Sometimes that’s a premium product. Sometimes it’s a value option that will make you just as happy. The only way to know is to have the conversation.
Let’s talk about your project
